Fox's Wishlist For Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes Directors

Looper, Hellboy and Cloverfield directors amongst the most wanted list
Deadline – which is usually pretty on-the-ball about this kind of thing – has posted a list of Fox's “most wanted” directors for the Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes sequel, Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes.
Rupert Wyatt – much to film fans’ dismay after he did such a great job with the original – backed away from the sequel after allegedly baulking at the intense production schedule required to get the film into cinemas by May 2014.
So apparently Fox’s wish list is:
• Matt Reeves (Coverfield)
• J Blakeson (The Disappearance of Alice Creed, The Decent 2)
• Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (28 Weeks Later, attached to the Highlander reboot)
• Juan Antonio Bayona (The Orphanage)
• Jeff Nichols (Take Shelter)
• Guillermo del Toro (Hellboy, Pan’s Labyrinth)
• Rian Johnson (Looper)
Deadline reckons that Reeves is the frontrunner, and certainly he has just left Warner’s remake of The Twilight Zone, so seems available. Guillermo del Toro seems pie-in-the-sky thinking considering his current schedule (especially if Fox wants the film in cinemas by May 2014). Bayona would be an interesting choice, though. Blakeson just sounds like the cheap option – he’ll get it done in time and on budget in a workmanlike way… And Rian Johnson – yeah, that could be exciting too. Odd that Josh Trank isn’t on the list; he seems to be potentially directing every other genre film in Hollywood at the moment.
